Mercedes’ Toto Wolff says Nico Rosberg’s performance throughout the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend was “very impressive” as he cut the gap in the championship standings.

Lewis Hamilton had won the previous five races – including Austin where Rosberg had been on pole – to open up a 24-point lead with two rounds of the season remaining. At Interlagos, Rosberg bounced back to top every session, take pole and convert it in to victory despite intense pressure from Hamilton in the closing laps. With the gap now 17 points ahead of the season finale, Wolff said Rosberg had shown a huge amount of mental strength in Brazil.

Asked how impressive Rosberg’s performance had been, Wolff replied: “Very impressive.

“Psychologically I guess the weekend was very important for him because dominating every single session and then winning the race with Lewis Hamilton behind your back, pushing hard. Withstanding that push and keeping it all together shows that he wasn’t only a great qualifier this season, he showed the skills to win the race against the guy who is leading the championship.

“Although victory isn’t enough for him for Abu Dhabi, psychologically and for the fans and for Formula One it’s a great rebound. It’s going to make us all look excitedly towards Abu Dhabi.”

While Wolff has previously conceded that double points in Abu Dhabi could “overshadow” the season, he said Rosberg should be viewed as a worthy champion if he takes the title thanks to the different points system at the final race.

“Whoever has most points at the end of the season is the worthy champion. You have to be pragmatic, even though some of us – if it really comes down to that situation – might have a different feeling about it. It is what it is, and whoever wins the championship is going to have his name in the record books. That’s it.”
