Second free practice cancelled – 2015 American Grand Prix

Friday’s second practice session for the United States Grand Prix has been called off by officials, with no sign of the poor weather conditions which have hit the Circuit of the Americas improving sufficiently.

Shortly before the planned 14:00 local time session start, FP2 was delayed “indefinitely” by Race Control, as marshals were unable to attend their posts due to the threat of lightning.

After lengthy talks between Race Director Charlie Whiting, Deputy Race Director Herbie Blash and Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, the decision was made to abandon the session.

“P2 is cancelled. No medical helicopter operations for the next two hours,” read a brief message from Race Control, issued just under an hour after the session was due to get under way.

Ecclestone said he felt sorry for the spectators who had turned up to watch the action.

“It’s incredible, you’d think here there’s no way for rain at this time of year, but there you go, you never know,” Ecclestone explained to Sky Sports, when asked about the weather conditions.

“I feel sorry for the public who have come here to see racing and are getting soaked.”

Further poor weather is expected in Austin and surrounding areas on Saturday.
