Niki Lauda: Nico Rosberg win gets his stability back

Niki Lauda says Nico Rosberg’s comprehensive win in the Mexican Grand Prix was the result he needed to regain ‘stability’ after a run of frustrating form pitched him out of the 2015 F1 title fight with three races to go.

Starting from his fourth consecutive pole position at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Rosberg was never troubled en route to his first race victory since June’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Coming a week after a late mistake in the United States Grand Prix cost him both a win and the world title to Lewis Hamilton, Lauda feels Rosberg’s Mexican GP performance was as convincing a response as he could have wanted

“I feel sorry for Nico because I know what it is like when you get blown off all the time,” said the three-time world champion. “The worst thing is when you screw a race up and the other guy is champion, it’s the worst thing that can happen to a racing driver.

“Therefore it’s good that this race was the other way round, so he gets his stability back and he will keep on fighting.

“For me the most important thing is these two guys push each other and if one does not push anymore the other one doesn’t go as quick. This calibration now is back which I think is very good for the drivers and for us.”

Rosberg’s win sees him leapfrog Sebastian Vettel for second in the overall standings, the Ferrari driver’s DNF making the Mercedes man the strong favourite for the runners-up spot to Hamiilton.
