Nico Rosberg vs Lewis Hamilton: How the title can be won

Nico Rosberg reduced Lewis Hamilton’s championship lead to just 17 points by claiming a classy victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix, with “everything to play for” at the upcoming season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Under standard regulations, Hamilton would be able to seal the crown by finishing sixth at next weekend’s event, but ‘Abu Double’ has left the door open for Rosberg.

Nonetheless, the 2014 Drivers’ Championship is still in Hamilton’s hands, with second place enough for the title even if Rosberg claims the maximum 50 points on offer.

If Rosberg comes home second, Hamilton would only need to finish fifth, while third for Rosberg would see Hamilton only having to cross the line in sixth.

One aspect is crystal clear: Rosberg must finish fifth to have any chance of taking honours.

Abu Dhabi points system:

1st: 50
2nd: 36

4th: 24
5th: 20
6th: 16
7th: 12
8th: 8
9th: 4

Finish no worse than second if Rosberg wins
Finish fifth or better if Rosberg is second

How Rosberg can win the title:
