Nico Rosberg: Title battle finely poised

Nico Rosberg says the battle for the title with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton could go either way heading into the second half of the season.

Rosberg is 21 points behind Hamilton but could have closed the gap dramatically had he not suffered a puncture after contact with Daniel Riccardo at the last race in Hungary. However, Rosberg has no doubt that the title battle is still very much alive and thinks it will only take a marginal improvement to tip it in his favour.

“I need to keep pushing the way I have and it just needs to be slightly the other way,” he said. “It is 21 points and at times in the last race I was leading the championship, so it was very close in the first half, so what I think I need to do is keep on going like this, keep pushing, keep winning races and I believe I can make it up.”

One area in which Hamilton has dominated Rosberg is qualifying, which was Rosberg’s strong point in 2014. Rosberg is 9-1 down head-to-head in qualifying this year and admits he does not fully understand the reasons why.

“Two things; Part of it I don’t understand and the other part is the compromise, part of qualifying and race pace. I shifted it towards being stronger in the racing, which is what I need to do looking at last year. Play by ear, see how it goes in the next couple of races.”

This weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix is being held at the venue of one of the main flashpoints of last year’s title battle when Hamilton and Rosberg collided on the second lap.

“It was a tough time after this race last year,” Rosberg admitted. “No regrets, but I learnt a lot.”

Asked exactly what he learned, Rosberg added: “That is going too personal. Not going to go into those details.”
