Nico Rosberg must make a Hamilton pass ‘stick’ to have F1 title chance

Nico Rosberg needs to successfully pass Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton on track to have any chance of wrestling control of the championship battle, according to ex-Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle.

Rosberg was the better qualifier of the two in last year’s F1 title battle as he took 11 poles to Hamilton’s seven across the 2014 season.

But despite winning five grands prix, Rosberg was unable to make a pass on his team-mate stick at any point during the campaign, with Hamilton going on to win 11 races.

“Rosberg needs to keep doing the same thing as he did last year by outqualifying him,” Brundle told AUTOSPORT.

“Then in wheel-to-wheel combat he’s got to beat him, because he never passed him and made it stick last year.”

Brundle conceded that with Hamilton on the form that took him to the 2014 title and a dominant win in this year’s Australian Grand Prix opener, there might be very little Rosberg can do beat his team-mate.

“Lewis can adapt, he’s aggressive and he’s also a bit of a street fighter in wheel-to-wheel combat,” added Brundle.

“I think he’ll be super-confident.

“He’ll be aware of a newly determined Nico Rosberg, but frankly if Lewis delivers his ultimate potential every weekend, I don’t think Nico will have a look in.”
