Nico Rosberg: Lewis relationship more relaxed

Nico Rosberg believes his relationship with his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton is better than it was last year, but says things can change quickly.

Having been great friends during their time in karting and coming through the motorsport ranks, the two drivers found it difficult to balance friendship and rivalry in 2014, leading to a breakdown in relations.

The pair’s relationship was tense throughout last season, with a number of heated flashpoints which reached a peak at the Belgian Grand Prix where Rosberg was reprimanded after the pair collided.

Speaking after qualifying at last year’s Monaco GP, where Rosberg took pole position after some gamesmanship, Hamilton made it quite clear that he and Rosberg were not friends.

He told the BBC: “People are always talking about friends, I can count my friends on one hand. I am sure Nico can do the same. I am not in his five and he is not in my five.

“The rest does not matter. We are here to win and here to race, we have a great amount of respect for each other, that is all we need.”

As was the case in the 2014 campaign, the duo are once again leading the way at the top of the World Championship standings, with Hamilton currently holding a 17-point advantage over his German team-mate.

Rosberg has revealed that his interactions with Hamilton are not as frosty as they were last season, but that there is no guarantee they will stay that way.

“It’s just more relaxed at the moment between the two of us, but it can change very quickly,” he told Autosport of the team dynamic.

“[The tense flashpoints were] just between the two drivers, otherwise everything is the same.

“The atmosphere was great last year and it is again this year.”

The rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg can be difficult to manage, but Rosberg believes that one of Mercedes’ strengths is that they are able to work together as a team to ensure they remain ahead of their rivals.

“We’ve always had a certain amount of commitment towards the team – to help move us all forward, and that’s still the same,” he added.

“It’s just great to see that when the team came under pressure from Ferrari we’ve done better than everybody else; we’ve moved away.

“It’s fantastic the level that we’re at – absolutely the best in every area.”
