Nico Rosberg: I need to work on my one lap pace

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg says he needs to work on his one lap pace even though he posted the best time overall on Friday in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Rosberg edged out team-mate Lewis Hamilton by 0.070s in FP1 in the morning, but slipped to third in the afternoon, although his time in the opening session was still the fastest of the day, albeit just 0.024s up on Hamilton’s marker in FP2.

Asked why his pace wasn’t so strong in the afternoon on the short runs, Rosberg replied: “It is always a compromise between long run and short run, set-up wise and everything. Especially in these conditions, it is very hot out there so very tough on the tyres on a long run. But for sure I need to work on my one lap pace for tomorrow.”

Rosberg had issues downshifting in FP2, but insisted it wasn’t anything to worry about.

“It is just some small problems, we need to fine-tune some of those things. We were trying some new settings on the downshifts and that meant when I was pulling for the downshifts there was a delay, it didn’t go in straight away. That was just a bit awkward so we came back on those,” he explained.

“All in all it was a good day, I have to say for the race especially. It was looking pretty good, especially compared to Ferrari which is important and compared to Lewis it was close.

“On one lap [though] I still have some work to do.”

And his mindset for Saturday and Sunday, given he is 27 points behind Hamilton in the drivers’ championship?

“A good mindset, it is great to be here. I have an awesome car and I just look forward to the weekend and hope to do a good job.”
