Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg believes that Ferrari will be fighting for victories this season, as the pre-season testing campaign reached its halfway mark.

Rosberg completed 66 laps during the morning session in his Mercedes W06 Hybrid to go sixth, while Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen – who topped the times at Jerez – finished as runner-up for the second consecutive day.

“For sure, yes. Definitely our eyes are wide open at the moment,” Rosberg said when asked whether Ferrari was a threat for victories.

“It’s clear that the others have really stepped up their game, [the] lap times are surprising to us. In relation it seems Ferrari has made the biggest step at the moment.”

Rosberg sat out the afternoon session as a precaution due to a neck injury, which the German put down to an altered seating position in his Mercedes.

“I know the cause of it, it was my position in the car, which I got a bit wrong. I didn’t realise, so [I was] just being careful but it was all fine,” he said.

“I liked it different but I can’t drive the one I like, my neck doesn’t like that one! I changed it in the winter, it’s incredible how a fine line it is sometimes, it was centimetres in this case and it changed everything.”
