Nico Rosberg braced for tough Singapore GP

Nico Rosberg says that Mercedes cannot approach the Singapore Grand Prix with confidence, despite winning all bar one race so far this season, given its troubles at the event last year.

Mercedes endured a difficult weekend at the Marina Bay Street Circuit 12 months ago, as Rosberg and team-mate Lewis Hamilton struggled to extract performance from their tyres.

Hamilton and Rosberg ultimately qualified in fifth and sixth respectively, behind the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers, and around half a second adrift of Sebastian Vettel’s pole position time.

“We can’t go there with too much confidence, as we were miles off last year,” said Rosberg, who went on to finish the race in fourth position, overhauling the Red Bull of Daniil Kvyat.

“In qualifying it [the deficit] was 1.8 seconds, if I’m not mistaken, which is huge.

“It’s our most difficult race in the last years. It’s going to be a very, very challenging weekend for us. We think that we’ve made progress, but 1.8 seconds? It’s not going to be easy to improve.”
