Nico Rosberg: battling Lewis Hamilton very different to Michael Schumacher

Nico Rosberg says his battle with Lewis Hamilton is very different to the team dynamic he experienced as Michael Schumacher’s team-mate between 2010 and 2012.

Rosberg and Hamilton have been Mercedes team-mates since 2013, rekindling their old karting rivalry and thrusting them into a battle for the championship now that Mercedes has emerged as the dominant force in F1. The extra pressure of fighting for the title means Rosberg finds the rivalry with Hamilton more intense than the one he had with Schumacher, when Mercedes was struggling to fight at the front.

“It’s very different,” he said. “Both are great opponents, but it’s just a different situation because we are now fighting for wins and championships and that makes it a whole lot different. With Michael we were fighting for eighth and 12th, so it was a different story.

“[Fighting for the title] puts more focus on the battle between the two of us, whereas with Michael sometimes we didn’t even notice that we were fighting between the two of us because we were in different places or whatever. With Lewis it does make it much more intense and complicated because it’s just the two of us fighting it out, so it’s difficult to compare.”
