David Coulthard believes that Nico Rosberg will provide a much tougher challenge to World Champion Lewis Hamilton during the 2015 campaign, having gained the experience of his 2014 title loss.

Rosberg battled with Mercedes team-mate Hamilton for the 2014 crown and entered the final round of the year in Abu Dhabi with a shot at winning the title, but mechanical woes restricted him to 14th position in a race dominated by eventual champion Hamilton.

Coulthard, who won 13 races for Williams and McLaren across a 15 year career in Formula 1, reckons that Rosberg will be stronger as a result of his year as a front runner.

“I see Nico being stronger than he was [in 2014] as he now has this experience of battling for a World Championship,” Coulthard said at the Autosport Show.

“That was the first time he had the spotlight of expectation. A lot of drivers, and I know this from personal experience, think ‘if I was in a winning car then winning would be easy’, but winning is not easy even in a winning car. It’s difficult and it should be difficult as usually you have a strong competitior in the other car.”

Coulthard added that he finds it difficult to envisage Lewis Hamilton improving as the Briton is already performing at ‘such a high level’.

“I don’t see how he can be better as he’s at such an incredibly high level, he’s been in a championship battle four times and he’s won it twice; he’s a more mature and rounded individual than he was at the beginning of his career,” he said.

“But for Nico that experience of the highs and lows of success and failure, he’s gone through the booing stage where people weren’t very happy about what you’ve done on the race track and all of that makes you stronger and that makes him better competitor and a bigger challenger to Lewis in 2015.”
